Have you ever wondered why the Sapphire Weapon's attack on Junon seemed so familiar as a kid? It was almost certainly influenced by FFVII writer Kazushige Nojima's interest in classic films.

Based heavily on Greek mythology, the movie Clash of the Titans (1981) centres around the legendary exploits of the hero Perseus. In the film, the goddess Thetis demands that Andromeda is sacrificed to the Kraken or the coastal city of Joppa will be decimated. In this case, the Kraken (borrowed from Nordic folklore) is a multi-limbed, serpentine sea monster.

When the chosen day arrives, Andromeda is shackled to a sacrificial rock to await the Kraken. As it approaches, Perseus swoops out of the sky on his winged horse, Pegasus. He lifts the cursed head of Medusa in the direction of the fiend, causing it to petrify and crumble into the water. Andromeda is unbound and she and Perseus live happily ever after.

It may not be obvious at first, but Final Fantasy VII's plot becomes comparable to Clash of the Titans when Tifa regains consciousness in Junon, following the events at the Northern Crater. Tifa is sentenced to death by Scarlet as a scapegoat for Meteor's summoning and is cuffed to a chair in the Shinra Exec's gas chamber.
